Deutsche Borse Chief Exec Werner Seifert has sparked opposition with his plans for a merger with Clearstream. Clearstream is one of Europe's two main depositories for international clearing, and critics claim the merger plan will hinder horizontal integration and a single European securities market.

The London Stock Exchange's (LSE) proposed takeover of the London International Financial Futures & Options Exchange (Liffe) could spark further mergers amongst European exchanges. LSE may find competition from European rivals in its bid to acquire Liffe.
