VersaTel Telecom has obtained a licence to install a telecommunications network in Belgium. The firm intends on installing a fibre optic network similar to one already installed by the company in Holland. The licence forms part of VersaTel's overall plan of constructing a network linking the Benelux countries to Germany, France and England by the end of 1999. In the Benelux countries alone, the firm expects to link 270,000 businesses. 1998 turnover is expected to double.

Although it has not been confirmed the Brussels local authorities are reported to have pre-selected 7 potential candidates for the supply of a broadband telecoms network to be erected in the Brussels area. France T l com, BT, Colt Telecom, Telindus, WorldCom, Unisource and Belgacom are reported to have been short-listed to submit a precise offer. The local authorities are to choose the final candidate by the beginning of 1999.
