What are banks for?

Article Abstract:

The US government and its banking industry are meeting each other's needs, as for the first time since 1965 the Treasury is about to become a bigger customer of bank credit than the country's businesses. Whether the government can borrow efficiently enough to stimulate economic growth remains to be seen.

What surprise? American banks

Article Abstract:

There may not be a serious bank crisis when the FDIC Improvements Act goes into effect Dec 19, 1992. Banks will be closed sooner, before they are insolvent, but few banks that have not already been closed are in trouble. Closures and mergers will strengthen the industry.
