What would Confucius say now?

Article Abstract:

Asian values, and Confucian teaching had been credited with helping to boost the economic performance of East Asia, until that region was hit by economic collapse. Some observers argue that Asian values contributed to the problems, yet this is not clear cut. Values labeled Asian include thrift, respect for authority, and attachment to family life. Asia is a large area with different intellectual traditions and different success levels in achieving economic growth. Autocracy should not be justified in terms of Asian values, and westerners should not express triumphalist views about how superior their ways are compared to Asian values.

Distinctive themes from black home economists

Article Abstract:

Black home economists have contributed significant research on black family life and the black experience. Although black families differ from white families culturally and socially, past researchers have viewed black families from a white perspective and have judged the differences of black families as inferior. Research by black home economists has opened up a previously monocultural field. They must continue to lead the way in the search for other perspectives which reflect the diversity of family life in the US.
