Where now for the BJP?

Article Abstract:

India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is portrayed by the political opposition as representing intolerance, and there have been attacks on Roman Catholic prayer halls in Gujerat where the BJP governs. The BJP notes that wings are a characteristic of all major parties. Prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee has had problems in passing economic reform bills due to divisions in the coalition. The BJP has made a display of tolerance in order to retain power. Indians blame the BJP for a rise in the price of staples like onions, and this has affected its performance in elections.

Knowing your onions in India

Article Abstract:

Indian elections are due to be held in four states in fall 1998, and they could be influenced by the high price of staple vegetables due to unexpected rainfall. This has led to panic buying, queues and shortages, especially in Delhi, which has been particularly badly hit. The opposition Congress party blames the government, a coalition led by the Bharatiya Janata party, which argues that nature is to blame. Critics claim that the BJP supports the traders to the detriment of consumers.

The battle for India

Article Abstract:

A campaign for general elections to be held in India in Sep and Oct 1999 is under way and a coalition government is likely to emerge. The government is unlikely to change much, so there may be little change in economic policies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been portrayed as a champion of India which is a role that Congress previously took on. Events could change the fortunes of the parties, especially if there are renewed clashes with Pakistan.
