Who needs NTT?

Article Abstract:

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) has controlled domestic telecoms tariffs in Japan, and this is likely to change with new entrants into the market. High charges have hampered the development of electronic commerce. NTT has been under pressure from the authorities to cut its charges, and Sony plans to bypass the company with its own network using wireless connections. Japanese utilities also represent competition for NTT. SpeedNet has been set up by Softbank, Microsoft and Tokyo Electric Power Utility, and will bypass the network of NTT.
