Who needs money?

Article Abstract:

Australia's major banks have uncomfortable amounts of unlent cash, probably leading to more mergers and expansion overseas as well as stock buy-backs and the like. The banks set profitability records in 1993-94, due chiefly to sharply lower set-asides for bad debt; in all, the conditions remind many of those in the late 1980s that led to record bad-debt losses. Mergers and sales of banks will probably lead to only three dominant institutions nationwide, with insurance companies expanding into some banking business.

Demands of freedom

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's banks have been enormously successful since 1988 thanks to a strong economy, but many are concerned about moves to further liberalize the sector in compliance with World Trade Org requirements. Critics of the changes note that the Malaysian financial industry is already permeated with foreigners, but they are making little headway. The nation's largest bank, Maybank, is aggressively expanding overseas, while the central bank presses smaller institutions to merge in pursuit of greater size and strength.
