Economic reforms in China are breaking the Communist Party's influence on workers. As more employees gain income from private firms, the populace is no longer dependent on state-controlled jobs for housing and health care. About 125 million workers are fully employed by private enterprises.

China's hopeful successors to Deng Xiapoing are angered by Deng's children using the family name for publicity and announcing that the 90-year-old leader's death is imminent. His daughter, Deng Rong, has published a book, 'Deng Xiaoping, My Father,' in the US.

China is making a concerted effort to clearly define its internal boundaries in order to put an end to disputes over natural resources. China has 30 separate provinces and other entities, and the country has a strong history of regional disputes.
