Why can't the quality of design and the way a building reacts with the neighbourhood be a test of how it works?

Article Abstract:

An architect believes that there is a contradiction in the planning system as the system insists on separating uses and giving little priority to good design while the consensus suggests that mixed-use and good-design are essential for towns and cities. A brief description on why those people who strive to create good architecture have to struggle with the planners on occasions is presented.

We are building fewer homes than our economic competitors - Even countries like Germany

Article Abstract:

The problem of housing shortage in the US can be attributed to the builders claiming that there is a delay in obtaining planning permissions. It is suggested that politicians could be authorized to agree to the master plan and developers should be selected based on the quality of their architecture as in the case of Amsterdam, to improve the present situation.

Nothing is sacrosanct simply because of its age - I would demolish any building if it were to be replaced by a better one

Article Abstract:

Demolition is an easy solution to old, problematic buildings, but it should be exercised as a last resort. It is suggested that with thought and good architecture, many old buildings can be adapted and brought back into use.
