Wiltshire's work of art

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Munkenbeck & Marshall has designed a new gallery for Roche Court in Wiltshire, England, the family home of Madeleine, Countess of Bessborough. This house became the base for the new Art Centre in 1993. The new gallery is a 20mt long by 4.5mt wide single-storey building located between the house and the orangery. The brick wall of the kitchen garden forms the rear south wall, while unframed glass panels have been used for the new north wall. The gallery steps down in three wide planes to adjust to changes in level between the house and the orangery.

Urban pioneer

Article Abstract:

Cartwight Pickard Architects chose a modular construction system linked with high levels of prefabrication for the Peabody Trust's Murray Grove housing scheme in Hackney, London, England. The accommodation is set out in two straightforward bars along Murray Grove and Shepherdess Walk, with living spaces facing south-east and south-west into a landscaped courtyard. The flats are made from room modules built as a steel monocoque with prefinished internal walls. The modules are clad with red cedar on the courtyard side and terracotta panels on the street side.

Orangery blossoms in Prague

Article Abstract:

Eva Jiricna Architects has designed an Orangery to replace the original greenhouse at the medieval castle in Prague, Czech Republic. This structure uses the footprint of the greenhouse and runs for 100 mt fronting the retaining wall of the royal gardens. It is made mainly of glass and steel, and uses a prismatic truss beam to overcome difficulties associated with having to retain the historic wall but not rest on it. The external stainless steel structure is created by 60.3 mm-diameter tubular steel welded crosses.
