Wobbly tigers: East Asia's economies are experiencing growing pains

Article Abstract:

The speedy growth of the East Asian economies has slowed, and some nations have accrued huge current-accounts deficits. Curbs on imports, as suggested in Malaysia, South Korea and Thailand, are unwise. They would do better to tighten their fiscal policies and untie their currencies from the US dollar.

Pointing the finger - at East Asia

Article Abstract:

East Asia's emerging economies are again in economic crisis, only three years after the last crisis of 1997-98. The current crisis is only partly due to external factors: most of the problems are a result of Asian governments' failure to use monetary and fiscal policies effectively.

South-East Asia's wealth gap

There have been reports that the economic boom in East Asia has been equally balanced, with all segments of the population sharing the gains, but in fact the 'wealth gap' has become a political issue in many countries, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines.
