Working glass culture

Article Abstract:

The National Glass Centre in Sunderland, England, celebrates a local industry which dates back to 674 AD. The 16 million pounds sterling building also forms part of an urban renewal programme. Gollifer Associates won the international competition to design the building which houses studios and factory space as well as visitor facilities. Gollifer's design incorporates a glazed roof which slopes gently up to the river bank at the front of the building. The roof, which is a public space designed to hold 14,000 people, demonstrates the strength of glass. Other areas demonstrate its translucent qualities.

The the lighthouse: The Glasgow Lighthouse has received funding for an initiative to transform its viewing gallery into a zero-energy space

Article Abstract:

The Lighthouse in Glasgow was designed in 1883 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and is currently being transformed into an architecture and design centre, after being derelict for 20 years. The conversion is being funded through the National Lottery, the Scottish Council and other groups. Part of the conversion involves turning the rooftop viewing gallery into a zero-energy space, and the building will be monitored closely during its first year of occupation, so that the performance and durability of renewable energy systems can be established.

Designs on Manchester

Article Abstract:

Architects Ian Simpson and Rachael Haugh established Manchester-based Simpson Associates in 1986. Following a project to convert a derelict warehouse in Knott Mill, of which they were part-owners, into offices, the two architects became involved in the Central Manchester Development Corporation's plan to regenerate the area. They have designed, and partly own, a bar/cafe in a listed Knott Hill building and are also seeking a suitable site for a jazz club.
