Wounds of history: surging resentment of Vietnamese could spark new pogroms

Article Abstract:

The UN-sponsored peace process in Cambodia is being threatened by the traditional enmity between Khmers and Vietnamese. The influx of Vietnamese immigrants attracted by opportunities in Cambodia is already fueling the racist campaign of the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge has also attacked the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia for alleged collaboration with Vietnamese. With the tense situation already developing between Khmers and Vietnamese, UN officials fear that this could erupt in violence once the UN peacekeepers relinquish authority in Cambodia.

Blood brothers

Article Abstract:

The Khmer People's National Liberation Front (KPNLF) has joined the Khmer Rouge in calling for the elimination of ethnic Vietnamese from Cambodia. UN officials say that the eruption of ethnic violence will have potentially disastrous effects on Cambodia. However, officials agree that it would not be easy addressing the anti-Vietnamese sentiment among the Cambodians as the number of Vietnamese immigrants to the country continue to increase.
