Yamanouchi shifts strategy

Article Abstract:

Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co is looking forward to increase its Asian revenues to $82.9 million by concentrating on key markets, including Indonesia. In fact, the Japanese-based company is slated to open a facility in Indonesia by Aug 1999. Sources also revealed that the company is further planning to forge a a monumental deal with a major local drug manufacturing wholesaler in Indonesia. Yamanouchi officials denied to provide details of the plan until the deal has been finalized.

Shrugging off recession

Merck and Co has maintained a considerable share of the US pharmaceutical market despite the debilitating impact of the Asian regional crisis. Company officials attribute Merck's success to its highly profitable operations in Europe and North America, where the company has established itself as an industry leader. The company further plans to expand its marketing scope through the development of a new osteoarthritis medicine and an anti-asthma preparation.

Japan's big drug makers have an edge with patents on competitive products

Article Abstract:

Big Japanese drug companies such as Sankyo Co. Ltd. and Takeda Chemical Industries Ltd. are not in danger of losing market share to foreign pharmaceutical firms. Such companies own global patents to popular drugs which gives them a competitive advantage. Furthermore, foreign drug makers efforts to enhance presence in the Japanese market will be stemmed by the government's efforts to control medical costs.
