Yen's mixed blessing

Article Abstract:

The Japanese yen's rising value, which hit 110.70 to the US dollar on Apr 19, 1993, will hurt Japanese manufacturers, will help some Asian manufacturers but will not lead to more Japanese investment in East Asia. Japanese car and electronics makers will have to cut exports and production and will have a harder time reorganizing because of the yen's high cost. Hard times for Japanese companies will allow their competitors in South Korea, Taiwan, Hongkong and Singapore to expand. Japanese investment firms' financial weakness will deter them from investing in Asia despite the high yen.

Politics turns sexy: media thrives on turmoil in government

Article Abstract:

Japan's press, traditionally apolitical due to the boring regularity of Japanese politics, has rediscovered political coverage now that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) finally fell from power. Television and the tabloid newspapers had a particularly powerful impact on the Jul 18, 1993 election that toppled the LDP. These changes have at least temporarily broken up the close relations that long prevailed between politicians and journalists. However, some media critics argue that the new coverage tends to oversimplify and to be excessively emotional.

Moment of truth

Article Abstract:

Japan's new seven-party coalition government will eventually collapse, but little else is certain. The parties range from conservative reform groups to Buddhists to Marxists and splinter groups from the former ruling group, the Liberal Democratic Party. The largest of the seven is the Social Democrat Party; second is the Japan Renewal Party. Morihiro Hosokawa, leader of the Japan New Party, is the coalition's candidate for prime minister.
