Young Turks on the move

Article Abstract:

A new force is influencing politics in Thailand. Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai has appointed a number of advisers who are nearly all in their 30s. They are highly-educated products of the Asian boom years and favour technological innovation as a solution. They entered politics for its own sake and maintain that they have a strong commitment to democracy and oppose all forms of corruption. There is a danger that the Thai rural majority could reject the new approach and image, but foreign investors seem to approve, and the Thai economy has regained a measure of confidence.

Indirect intervention

Article Abstract:

Thai military leaders are becoming involved in the country's economic crisis, but the involvement is more indirect than in the past. A senior military representative has ruled out the possibility of a coup, but a defence attache reports signs of military support for a non-elected premier. Military leaders have shown support for Premier Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, but an influential aspect in this support is their distrust of the opposition Democrat Party. The Democrat Party plans to uphold the democratic process and raise a motion of no-confidence against Chavalit.
