New real-time audio-streaming software such RealAudio from Progressive Networks has led to hundreds of new web-based radio stations going on-line in the last year. A huge variety of audio fare is now available, including radiodrama, news-talk, and alternative music.

'The Lux Radio Theatre' was highly popular between 1934-1955, and inspired the creation of many other dramatic radio shows. The Lux show, which was a vehicle for promoting Lux toilet soap, focused mainly on adapting film scripts for radio.
