Zanzibar village builds on African and European ideas

Article Abstract:

An orphans' village in Zanzibar, Tanzania combines the best of local and European architecture. The village is funded by the Austrian charity SOS-Kinderdorf-Verlag and designed by Otto-Roman Barnert to provide safe homes for up to 240 orphans. The village has 15 to 20 houses, each with its own characteristics and linked by pathways and courtyards. There is also a school and administration building. Local materials have been used together with the passive ventilation techniques of African architecture. There is controversy about the ethics of using high Western standards in such a development.

Misunderstanding architecture

Article Abstract:

It is widely believed in the UK that architects have nothing to contribute to the planning process. In fact, this is far from being the case. If the UK government is truly to fulfill its goals regarding sustainable development, it is vital that architects are involved. Architects must play an active role in the planning process, and must show that they are extremely valuable as sensitive and imaginative designers of sustainable communities.
