The Hong Kong government has argued the credit rating downgrade of Hong Kong's foreign currency and major listed companies by Standard & Poor's was not reasonable. The following table shows the new credit ratings. HK's Long-term foreign currency A+ to A HK's short-term debt rating A1+ to A1 CLP's long-term foreign currency downgrade KCR's long-term foreign currency downgrade MTR's long-term foreign currency downgrade KCR's short-term foreign credit downgrade MTR's short-term foreign credit downgrade Sun Hung Kai Properties' corp. credit downgrade Hysan Development's corp. credit downgrade HSBC's short-term foreign currency downgrade GE Capital Finance's long-term credit downgrade These companies' credit rating downgrade was attributed to a decline in Hong Kong's financial flexibility from East-Asia's recession which may prolong through 1999, deflationary economy pressures, large government buyout of stocks and futures. *
