Software piracy has taken away Hong Kong's job opportunities of at least 5,778 and tax revenue of US$50.8 mn in 1996. A study showed 64% of business software of Hong Kong's personal computers was pirated in 1996. In 1996, software industry offered 4,200 jobs and made revenues of US$530.1 mn. The annual growth rate is expected at 21%, the highest among other industries. If the piracy rate reduces to 27%, U.S pirated level, it will boost job opportunities to 10,000. *

Why Broderbund is vulnerable

Broderbund Software Inc's purchase of the Learning Co at $440 million may have made it a likely target for acqusition, with some top European median companies thought to be interested. A leading industry bankers believes the company could fit well with another software provider as it is in the low-end, entertainment and consumer products area. However some believe that Broderbund will continue to make its own acquisitions.

Can Intuit make it on its own?

Article Abstract:

Intuit is still considered a viable takeover target, even though plans to link with Microsoft have been dropped. Intuit itself states that it is not seeking to be purchased, and is even using its high stock price to produce funds which could be used to make its own purchases. It is now determined to expand independently.
