smokers pay more for habit

Article Abstract:

The Chinese Government plans to cut taxes for tobacco productions to 20% from current 31% in 1999. Previously, it raised consumption tax on foreign cigarettes from 40% to 50%. It also introduced new tax system from domestic cigarette makers ranging from 20%, 40%, and 50% instead of standard rate of 40%. It seemed all these measures aim to protect domestic cigarette makers from overseas competition. Despite the tobacco industry reported a pre-tax profit of RMB90 bn in 1997, the health cost was also large. According to offical figures, there were 750,000 deaths per year due to smoking. Of which, one third were males aged less than 30. *

mianland corn exprts to remain same as last year

Article Abstract:

China's corn export volume in 1998 will likely stay the same as 1997's, because of competition with corn exporting countries. The country expects to produce 495 mn tons of grain in 1998, up from last year's 492 mn tons. The autumn harvest can compensate the lower summer harvest. The U.S Department of Agriculture estimates the mainland's corn output 1998 would be at 122 mn tonnes, up from 104.3 mn tonnes 1997. *
