...while Canada demonstrates VDL Mode 2

Article Abstract:

Canada undertook testing of the VHF datalink Mode 2 using SITA's Montreal facility in Oct 2000. The data transmissions were part of interoperability tests to convey ACARS datalink messages using the latest communications technology. Messages were sent between a VHF ground station developed by Harris with avionics provided by Rockwell Collins. The VDL Mode 2 service is scheduled for launch by the middle of 2001. It will be used in flight operations, air traffic control, maintenance and passenger services.

Rebuilding to renew confidence in the Balkans

Article Abstract:

The aviation industry of the Balkan region is still reeling from the recent NATO bombings in Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro. According to the Slovenian Tourist Board and Ministry of Small Business, the Kosovo conflict is expected to reduce the number of tourist nights for 1999 by almost 25% and foreign revenues by $85 million. The reduction in tourist- related foreign earnings may have a significant impact on technology and capacity upgrade programs that would have boosted the industry.

Shorter flight times to Asia

Article Abstract:

A new air route structure has been agreed for flights that will connect North America and Europe with Asia and the Pacific region. The agreement is the result of work done by the ICAO Informal Trans-Asia/Trans- Siberia/Cross Polar Routes High Level Steering Group, tasked with coordinating the requirements of international civil aviation. Demonstration flights by jet aircraft show that the new North Pole routes can shorten flight times and result in more convenient flight schedules.
