Allegheny fund moved proposed : the state and tenet want to put charitable donations into two new nonprofit organizations

Article Abstract:

In an effort to end the bankruptcy problems of Allegheny health system, the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office proposed a compromise whereby millions of dollars in charitable assets will be transferred to two new non-profit organizations. This would then allow Allegheny to be bought by Tenet Healthcare Corp. Concern exists that the funds were inappropriately used before the bankruptcy. An audit will determine this. At least $17 million are believed to have been taken. The complex deal will mean that Philadelphia Health & Education Corp. will oversee the funds and endowments held by MCP-Hahnemann Medical School and Allegheny's other professional schools. As part of the deal, the court has allowed Tenet to lay off some staff.
