Bad news bears

Article Abstract:

Mutual fund manager Kenneth G. Mertz 2d does not have Commerce Bancorp in his portfolio but he can relate to the bank's shareholders who rushed to him after two of its executives were charged with fraud. The investor's reaction to unexpected bad news about the firm and doubts whether they should sell first instead of trying to determine how the news will affect their earnings is discussed.

Investing locally

Article Abstract:

There generally are fewer mutual funds companies in locally focused portfolios than in broad diversified ones, so there is a greater likelihood of volatility in results. Focusing part of an investment portfolio on well-chosen hometown companies appears to improve investment performance.
