Banking on risky businesses: A nonprofit does well with less-conservative lending

Article Abstract:

The American Street Financial Services Center is part of a 10-year federal commitment to revitalize designated communities by establishing 'empowerment zones' in impoverished urban and rural areas. Luis Mora, executive director of the Philadelphia-based nonprofit believes that the organization has flourished since it became less conservative in giving loans to small businesses that lacked the creditworthiness needed to qualify for conventional borrowing from commercial banks.

Nancy S. Lurker, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the firm, believes that the industry's heavy spending on sales and marketing indirectly affects consumers by contributing to the rising costs of drugs in the US.
