DuPont reels from high energy prices

Article Abstract:

Wilmington, PA-based DuPont Co. still spends roughly $3 billion annually on oil and natural gas to supply its chemical works and other heavy manufacturing facilities, and it is still vulnerable to high energy costs. Although the company's shares are at a four-year low, DuPont vows it will not cut jobs, despite raising prices and pushing employees harder.

Philadelphia-area companies reflected a national trend where nearly three-fifths of the 263 publicly traded companies lost its share value. The surveys showed that the consumers and business owners are still optimistic because of the higher oil prices and loan rates that boosted costs and depressed the profit outlook for many stocks.
