Matthews International Capital Management L.L.C. in San Francisco is focusing on Japan and is buying shares of financial-services companies in anticipation of higher industry profit as consumer lending and investment climb. This mutual fund expects rising profit in its financial-services firms as the $195 million Matthews Japan Fund rose 27.5 percent in 2003.

Lowe's shares fall despite strong 4th-quarter earnings

Investors in Lowe's Cos. Inc. who have send the company's share price down nearly 3 percent despite a strong earnings report are focusing more on the future than the latest past, as on the 24 February 2004. The company's earnings of 51 cents a share beat Wall Street expectations by 2 cents a share.
