More states prodded on tobacco deal: a dozen states support the $206 billion plan to settle lawsuits

Article Abstract:

The tobacco industry and states reached an agreement on a $206 billion settlement over lawsuits that were filed against cigarette makers. Negotiators involved in the settlement talks worked to convince other states to sign the agreement. Under the agreement, state lawsuits that were filed to gain compensation for smoking-related health expenses will be resolved. The settlement will also transform the manner in which cigarettes are marketed and sold in the US. The state of Pennsylvania was one of at least a dozen states to express support for the settlement.
