The MV Manukai cargo ship is the first ship built in the Philadelphia area in 30 years. Its success could herald a return of the long dormant shipbuilding industry in the area. Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard built the ship for the Matson Navigation Co. (San Francisco, California).

Philadelphia-based FastShip Inc. has employed J.P. Morgan Securities Inc. as a financial consultant. The shipbuilding company is attempting to raise $1 billion for the construction of four cargo ships. FastShip predicts that 7,650 new jobs will be created in Philadelphia if funding is acquired.
