N.J. cranberry growers take key vote

Article Abstract:

Ocean Spray Growers is a structured co-operative, which specifically caters to the benefits of the growers of cranberry vines. The growers of New Jersey will decide the co-operative fate by voting whether to continue operating independently or enter into a joint venture with food and beverage behemoth PepsiCo Inc. which specifically targets better return for its shareholders which may mean buying cranberries as cheaply as possible.

'Active adults' fueling an area building boom

The home building industry of Pennsylvania and New Jersey are focusing on building homes for empty nesters and retirees, the 55-and-over people who want smaller residences, less maintenance and such amenities as clubhouses and golf courses. The active-adult-housing segment is growing and with an increase in its demand the demand for services for elder people will also rise.

Pressures souring region's farmers on dairy life

Several dairy farms in New Jersey are disappearing at an alarming rate due to intense pressure from developers, taxes, debt, low milk prices and lack of labor and support services. Proximity to two major milk-producing states-Pennsylvania and New York is putting New Jersey dairy farmers at a marketing disadvantage.
