Article Abstract:

Blue Bell, PA-based C&D Technologies Inc. (formerly Charter Power Systems Inc.) posted $300 million in sales in fiscal 1998, and now has a gross margin of roughly 27%, but the company's CEO will not be around to see if the firm makes its goal of 30%. CEO Alfred Weber is retiring. Under Weber's control, the company was able to recover from a loss and triple sales, boosting shareholder value, said Weber. The company was able to do this without laying off employees.
