SBC completes purchase of Comcast wireless

Article Abstract:

Philadelphia, Penn.-based Comcast Corp. has sold its cellular operations to San Antonio, Texas-based SBC Communications for $1.6 billion. SBC, which will provide wireless service to over 7 million customers in the Philadelphia area, has not decided on a new name for the Comcast Metrophone and Comcast Cellular One. Employees of the former Comcast wireless unit have not been notified of their future employment status. SBC's wireless competitors are AT&T, Bell Atlantic, Omnipoint, Nextel, and Sprint PCS.

Shareholder picture changing at General Instrument

Article Abstract:

Horsham, Pennsylvania-based General Instrument Corp. will sell a bigger stake in its company to Liberty Media Corp., raising Liberty's interest in General Instrument to an 18 percent share at a cost of $280 million. Liberty purchased the shares from New York, NY-based Forstmann Little and Co. Industry analysts have said that the investment comes as cable firms begin to compete with telephone companies.

Interactive-TV viewers' clicks send data, report warns

Article Abstract:

WorldGate Communications Inc., one of many companies throughout the U.S. that gathers viewer data from its interactive television service, states that it follows the cable industry's guidelines. The Center for Digital Democracy is none-the-less concerned about possibly misuse by such services.
