Stocks plummet as price of oil rises

Article Abstract:

Rise in crude oil prices and disappointing earnings from Hewlett-Packard Co. led to plummeting stocks on 12th August 2004, with Dow shedding more than 120 points, and all three major indexes reaching new year-to-date lows. The rise in the crude oil $45-per-barrel mark, trading at $45.50, up to 70 cents, on the New York Mercantile Exchange raised concerns that the Federal Reserves would have to be aggressive in further rate increase to combat inflation.

Airline, truckers and shipping companies try to defray the high costs by using financial trading strategies that hedge their fuel expenses and where possible put fuel surcharges on customers' bills.
