The great divide

Article Abstract:

East Baton Rouge (EBR) Parish's school board will vote on November 2007 on allowing teachers to decide on adopting collective bargaining and joining unions. The approval of collective bargaining will allow teachers to collectively negotiate salaries and other employment standards. Derrick Spell, a member of the EBR board, believes that this plan may not help improve student performance.

The boomerang effect

Article Abstract:

Gene and Rebecca Todaro left Baton Rouge in fall 2006 to live in Austin where there are excellent benefits such as good schools, clean environment and strong economy. The couple has returned to Baton Rouge in 2007 due to homesickness and to the high property prices in Austin. Baton Rouge and Austin are compared with regards to their economic, cultural and social qualities.
