Strike authorized for half of Bell Atlantic workers

Article Abstract:

Bell Atlantic of Atlanta, GA, faces an imminent strike after the 17-person governing board of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) authorized union president Morton Bahr to call a strike if no contract settlement is reached by midnight of Aug. 8, 1998. The board's authorization followed an authorization from union members, who approved a strike b a ratio of 9 to 1. CWA represents 73,000 workers at Bell Atlantic, which was last struck by the CWA in 1989. Unresolved issues include the hiring of outside contractors, forced overtime and inflexible scheduling.
