Will Congress derail funding for Amtrak?

Article Abstract:

Amtrak, a passenger railroad firm, is lobbying to keep a deal between US President Clinton and the Congress that ensures a federal operating subsidy of $621 million until 2001. The Senate, however, reduced the subsidy to $550 million. Amtrak acting president George Warrington said the reduction could result to cuts in 1999 and cancellation of planned improvements designed to decrease future subsidies such as enhancements to the firm's reservation and accounting technology. Amtrak's ability to boosts its private investments could be removed as a result.
