A comment on Brockner et al. (1993)

Article Abstract:

Brockner, Grover, O'Malley, Reed and Glynn argued in their paper which appeared in the 1993 Summer Special Issue of Strategic Management Journal that a combination of low self-esteem, high worry and high risk of future layoffs can motivate employees who survive layoffs. Based on this finding, they suggest that managers should expose employees with low self-esteem to the possibility of being terminated in the future to improve their motivation. However, the methodology of the researchers are flawed in two aspects. First, interaction in the field study reflects only a small portion of the variance estimates because the measures are only collected through self-reports. Second, the link between motivation and other variables may not be long-term because motivation was measured simultaneously with other variables or shortly after threat of layoffs was made. Lastly, worrying low-esteem employees for a long time may actually demotivate them.

Publication records and tenure decisions in the field of strategic management

Article Abstract:

A bibliometric study is conducted to assess the quantity and quality of publications of a sample of 96 doctorates in the field of strategic management whose first job after graduate school was in academics. Publication records for each individual before and after receipt of the doctoral degree are constructed by examining 20 academic journals that publish works on strategic management. Several factors are found to affect the publication records of the new faculty members. Findings reveal that the gender of the researchers and the number of publications have an impact on their likelihood of receiving tenure. As expected, those who have published more articles in academic journals have better chances of receiving tenure. Female researchers, regardless of their publication records, are less likely to receive tenure than male researchers.
