A critical appreciation of the uses for strategic management thinking, systems and techniques in British universities

Article Abstract:

The UK has been adamant in ensuring the effectivity of its educational system during the 1980's resulting in the formation of committees to assess areas of incompetency in the program, such as lack of strategic planning and dysfunctional administrative systems. As a response, the government has ensured the accountability of universities by providing a market mechanism of funding higher education teaching. Furthemore, strategic planning through analyzing the competitive management of a university was also considered as contributory to a successful university administration.

The development of local management of schools: budgets, accountability and educational impact

Article Abstract:

The 'Local Management in Schools Initiative' in the UK was implemented to rationalize the resource allocation process. This was in line with the 1988 Education Reform act that required local educational authorities (LEA) to find means to assume responsibility of fund management. A study of three LEAs in the North West of England was undertaken to evaluate the implementation of the system.
