A good vintage finally comes of age

Article Abstract:

Yates Wine Lodges began expanding from 1986 following an investment in refurbishing. A flotation was carried out in 1994, and the company has 52 outlets with plans to open more. The company was set up in the nineteenth century and sought to emulate Portuguese port lodges, supplying good food and inexpensive wine. The image of the lodges went down market and there was thus a need to invest in improving their image. The company began in northern England but its expansion into the south has been successful.

3i goes European but trails F and C

Article Abstract:

The venture capitalist investment trust, 3i, plans to expand in mainland Europe, since the UK is expected to experience an economic slowdown. The company is also investing more in assessing technology opportunities and may develop a relationship with US technology markets. Meanwhile, Foreign and Colonial Enterprise has outperformed 3i and has benefited from an exit from Computacentre following a stock flotation in May 1998, which has boosted the company's performance.
