A perilous summer chase for UK investment themes

Article Abstract:

There is a restricted choice of sectors in the United Kingdom compared to Wall Street, with few companies large enough to attract institutional investors, in many sectors. Selection of investments and identifying new trends thus becomes more important when assessing UK stocks. Cyclical stocks may benefit from improved world economic growth, while a drop in interest rates could help housebuilders and retailers. A drop in inflation may leave high real rates of interest, and rates of zero have not encouraged spending in Japan.

Weinberg dismisses small investors' gripes

Article Abstract:

Mark Weinberg has investigated private investors and share ownership in the UK. The Stock Exchange sought to assess whether private investors are given fair treatment. Weinberg's committee has carried out a study which is closer to market research. No recommendations have been made on issues such as costs of share dealing, usage of nominee accounts and the impact of a share settlement system launched in 1996. Investors tend not to mention unfair treatment as a reason for not directly buying shares, the committee notes.
