A principled approach to providing assurance

Article Abstract:

The Auditing Practices Board (APB) will issue a consultation draft introducing a framework of principles and procedures for auditors and reporting accountants who provide assurance on internal controls. This is in response to the increasing demand for auditors to provide assurance not only on historical financial statements but also on internal controls. Auditors will improve their performance and minimize the gap between their expectations and those of users if the objectives, evaluation conditions and reporting procedures for controls assurance engagements are clarified. The APB document is divided into three sections: principles applicable to engagements that include internal control assurance, the application of these principles, and questions that the APB would like users and practitioners to answer.

Computer accounting - the way forward

Article Abstract:

Establishment of computer systems in decentralized office environments is discussed. The ideal approach is to combine micro- and mainframe computers in such a way that the microcomputers are used for daily, routine tasks, and the mainframe is used for batch processing or for consolidating information. The key to this approach is to set up communication links between remote terminals and mainframes. Two types of transmission available are non-permanent dial-up connection suitable for small volumes of data, and dedicated private circuits for large volumes.
