A sinner recants

Article Abstract:

Investment in research could be seen as a sign of a company's weakness, but the efforts of Glaxo, Intel and Cisco have shown that research can lead to profits. Michael Tubbs has shown a link between investing consistently in industrial research and returns from stocks that are above average. There are 802 companies in the FTSE All-Share index, and these can be analysed to select companies that invest over 4% in research, and achieve good operating profit margins and sales growth. The 36 companies that performed best using these criteria can be analysed for the best combination between research spending and the lowest stock price to cash ratios.

Winning formula for growth stocks

Article Abstract:

Spending on R and D can give investors clues to a company's future performance, since efficient investments in research help to foster growth, especially in certain sectors. There should be a sustained investment since time elapses between the investment and success in the market. Companies canhamper their growth if they seek to boost profits in the short term by cutting back on research. Research spending alone is not enough for a company to perform well, but it can be used as an indicator with other variables.
