ACL 3.2 (Audit Command Language) (Software Review) (Evaluation)

Article Abstract:

Audit Command Language (ACL) is an interrogation software package based on an MS-DOS PC and designed to analyze financial data at a very fast rate. For instance, it can stratify a 30,000 record file within 18 seconds and come up with three reports from this file within a little more than half a minute. Aside from STRATIFY, the ACL has a multitude of commands including COUNT, TOTAL, LIST, STATISTICS and HISTOGRAM. This software package is extremely efficient, easy to set up and very functional. ACL has another version called ACL Plus. The only difference between the two is that ACL Plus is capable of automatically translating mini and mainframe computers' data formats and it allows a tape drive to be directly attached. Both versions are available from ACL Services Ltd in Vancouver, Canada. A single-user copy of ACL costs $995, while a single-user copy of ACL Plus is priced at $1,995.

MAP Business Software

Article Abstract:

MAP Business Software 6.0, available as separate 99 pounds sterling modules or as a 299 pounds sterling Complete Accounting package, offers flexibility, ease of use, and good value in a low-priced accounting system. Complete Accounting consists of nominal, sales, and purchase ledgers; stock and sales order processing; report generator; and data import-export tools. The menu-drive package is easy to install, can be configured to needs with many user-definable features, is expandable without corrupting current data, and can handle many high-volume transaction processes. Major debits are a limited range of transaction routines, few error messages, and no help screens. The nominal, sales, and purchase ledgers are more extensively discussed. MAP requires an IBM PC or Amstrad PC-PCW or compatibles running MS-DOS.

Taxman II

Article Abstract:

CSM Ltd's (Birmingham, UK) Taxman II is a stand-alone and multi-user menu-driven system that covers many aspects of personal taxation, including facsimile Inland Revenue income tax returns, Inland Revenue form 930, and the recording of original and amended assessments. Documentation is poor and there are no extra manuals for a multi-user system. The maintenance contract expensive, but telephone service is quick and efficient. There are minimal problems with facsimile tax returns, but a laser printer is required for preparing facsimile returns. The package is good for giving practitioners control over routine tax administration.
