Advancing human factors involvement in engineering design: a bridge not far enough?

Article Abstract:

The weakness of John Dowell and John Long's approach to the conception of cognitive engineering is its use of human factors methods. Dowell and Long's proposed model lacks the means to address measurement problems. Another limitation of the proposed model is the undefined design process and its relationship with other engineering areas. Furthermore, it was recommended that a well-defined principle for cognitive engineering be established.

Prospects for consensus and advancing cognitive engineering

Article Abstract:

The proposed model for the conception of cognitive engineering was regarded as a preliminary entry in the advancement of cognitive engineering as a discipline. It was recognized that to develop, cognitive engineering requires a number of design proposal for the selection process. Thus, commentaries about the proposed conceptions were welcomed as an indication that a consensus for its development exists.

Unscheduled manual interventions in automated process control

Article Abstract:

Unscheduled manual interventions (UMIs) are instances wherein operators assume control over automated processes run by computers. UMIs may be the result of a need for personal control in machine-centered workplaces. These actions are mainly discretionary, motivated by an operator's desire to hasten production sequences and improve product quality.
