Advantage Goliath

Article Abstract:

Financially troubled business enterprises in Canada have resorted to reorganizations or restructurings rather than going into bankruptcy receivership as a means to recover since roughly 1988. However, while public attention is often called to the major restructuring efforts of big firms, small and medium sized firms, which constitute 95% of the Canadian business landscape, face particular difficulties in attempting to restructure, for a number of reasons, and cannot implement restructuring plans as easily as their larger counterparts.

Small successes

Article Abstract:

Small and medium-sized Canadian companies use a five-fold strategy to succeed in the international market. Among the companies surveyed, 80% have a strategic projection of revenue, profits and operation costs while 76% of them have at least one non-Canadian business partner. Their admission of outside directors allows the companies to have access to varied skills and resources. Also, their focus on standard products, which has low customization cost, and their market-centered orientation increase their sale in foreign markets.
