Agencies perfect their pitch

Article Abstract:

UK development agencies aims to attract large international relocations such as Lucky Goldstar's 1.7 billion pounds sterling investment in Wales. US companies account for 33% of inward investment in the UK, and the needs of US companies have a major impact on what is offered in terms of investment locations. They seek flexible leases and locations close to major airports. Asian investors require airport links but regional airports will suffice. They are also cost conscious and are concerned that buildings should not overlook undesirable objects or be overlooked by them.

The devolution effect

Article Abstract:

There has been speculation about the impact of devolution on Scotland and Wales as business locations. New jobs will be created in both Cardiff, Wales and Edinburgh, England. Office space will be needed for the political infrastructure, lobbyists and Assembly in Wales. There was concern that the allocation of Treasury funds could become less generous, but the government has indicated that this will not occur. There is also concern that English regional development agencies could threaten Scotland's ability to attract inward investment.

RDAs for England stir controversy

Article Abstract:

Regional development agencies (RDAs) are planned for England and the launch of a government white paper on the subject has been postponed. This may be because there are divisions of opinion on the issue, with the Department of Trade and Industry unwilling to cede responsibility for some grants to the transport, environment and regions ministry. There is broad support for the project. Some English regions are especially in favor in order to strengthen their ability to gain inward investment.
