National Transparent Optical Network Consortium, McLean, Va., is being awarded a $21,690,000 technology-investment-agreement contract ($8,875,000, Government Portion; $12,815,000, Contractor Portion) to provide for design, development, and demonstration of a Flat Network Architecture, in support of the Next Generation Internet program. This architecture will include adjustable link capacities and nodes which provide for data packaging into containers for transmission. Expected contract completion date is Dec. 30, 2000. Solicitation issue date was Oct. 10, 1997. Negotiation completion date was Sept. 16, 1997. Air Force Research Laboratory, Rome, NY, is the contracting activity (F30602-98-2-0194).

This effort includes development and demonstration of a multi-gigabit testbed using end-to-end fiber connections with potential expansion to a national network.
