Airgas Inc

Airgas Inc (ARG) acquired Northern Gases, Newkirk Sales Co, Arrow-Weldit Sales & Engineering, and part of F.H. Bathke, reaffirming its position as the leading distributor of specialty, medical and industrial gases. ARG had earlier acquired 55 firms, within 27 months. Such takeovers are in line with the company's network expansion strategies, which had increased revenues from $8 million in 1982 to $322 million in 1992. For FY 1992, earnings per share had increased by 20%, from 67 to 75 cents. Stock price for a 52-week range rose from 13 3/4 to 24 3/4.

Compaq Computer Corp

First Boston raised its rating on Compaq Computer Corp (CPQ) from Hold to Buy. CPQ's Dec 1991 operating cost decreased by 25%, signifying that its cost structure is at a manageable level. Personal computer analyst Charlie Wolf states that CPQ is expected to attain a reasonable share of the market upon introduction of its line of competitively priced computers. The company is also adopting cost-saving strategies. Earnings estimate for 1992 is $2.80 per share.

The stock's surge from 12 to 20 1/4 is attributed to Andros' leading position as a supplier to the manufacturers of automotive diagnostic equipments and its entry into the medical equipment market.
