Alarm effectiveness in driver-centered collision-warning systems

Article Abstract:

The performance of completely automated collision-avoidance systems is investigated. The type and quality of the warning information provided to the driver is analyzed. Results show that only a fraction of alarms will represent true collision events. The posterior probability of a collision given an alarm can be considerably low due to the low base rate of collision events.

Development of a situation awareness measure to evaluate advanced alarm systems in nuclear power plant control rooms

Article Abstract:

The process controller must perform duties in maintaining situation awareness. Alarm systems are a key element in this task. A measure which estimates the effectiveness of the system in improving the operator's situation awareness is most welcome. The Situation Awareness Control Room Inventory is one measure being proposed alongside detection time and diagnostic accuracy.

Alarm-initiated activities: an analysis of alarm handling by operators using text-based alarm systems in supervisory control systems

Article Abstract:

Alarms play an important part in human supervisory control tasks by displaying information essential to the overall safety of the system. The use of visual display terminals is considered for the presentation of alarms, particularly scrolling text displays. This form of displaying information may not be suitable to all aspects of alarm handling.
