An empirical investigation of strategic investment decision models

Article Abstract:

The structure of models used to form judgments was investigated by studying 65 MBA students through a judgment-capturing process. Twenty strategic investment decision criteria were developed based on historical, future, environmental, and organizational factors. Thirty simulated cases were developed from the criteria, and each student was asked to decide whether to continue investment for each case. Acceptable data were obtained from 56 of the students, and the data were used to develop an overall model of judgment. The results indicated that the students used a limited range of variables in the decision-making process, but the overall model demonstrated that a wide range of cognitive models was used at the individual level.

Strategic management models and resource-based strategies among MNEs in a host market

Article Abstract:

A resource-based model of strategic management (SM) for the market entry of multinational enterprises (MNE) is presented. The SM model can offer insight into MNEs' host-country operations. The model demonstrates that MNEs assess their skills and assets before developing a firm-specific strategy for a host market. New strategies are limited by the existing resource base and the inventory of resources. Research on SM has indicated that international samples can improve the understanding of the resource-based SM model, and international studies play an important role in developing a theory of strategy.
